Suvereto is a town and commune in the south of the Province of Livorno in the Italian region of Tuscany, about 56 miles (90 km) southwest of Florence (Firenze) and about 37 miles (60 kilometres) southeast of Livorno.The town has medieval origins and was once entirely surrounded by walls. It lies on the border with the province of Grosseto in the valley of the river Cornia or Val di Cornia. Suvereto was once part of the Val di Cornia DOC but gained its own Suvereto DOCG denomination from the 2012 vintage onwards.

The town: The town is ringed by a pentagonal wall with eight watch towers which overlook the Costa degli Etruschi (Etruscan coast). The garrison or Rocca overlooks the town a strategic hill site. The city hall of Palazzo Comunale dates to 1200 and is renowned architecturally. The municipality is formed by the municipal seat of Suvereto and the villages (‘frazioni’) of Belveder, Montioni, Prata, and San Lorenzo. The small hamlets of Forni, Poggio al Turco, San Lorenzo Due, Tabarò and Valdamone are also included in the municipality.
