Signano is an organic estate winery at Località Santa Marguerita in the San Gimignano region of Tuscany in Italy. Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG and DOCG Riserva whites are made. Red wine is made under the San Gimignano Rosso DOC and Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG. A San Gimignano Vin Santo DOC has also been made.
Owners: Manrico Biagini. Ascanio Biagini bought the then 2ha estate in 1961. From 1966 he planted his first Vernaccia and Sangiovese vineyards, then built a winery. Over time, surrounding land was purchased. From 1987 Ascanio’s son Manrico began working here, and the vineyard area grew to its present size (around 25ha). Manrico’s son Pietro is also an oenologist.
Estate vineyards: 2013 24ha of vines of which 13ha Vernaccia and 11ha Sangiovese for Chianti Senesi. Around half is rented. | 2019 18ha of vines. 2 blocks. One block of 15ha is at the above-mentioned Località Santa Margherita, at 280m and close to the town of San Gimignano itself. The other block of vines comprises 3ha in Località Racciano, around the main building, Il Casolare di Bucciano, which is now used as an agritourism.
Other crops: 6ha of olives and saffron. Cinta senese pigs for salumi.
Organic certification: 2018 First vintage with full organic certification.
White wines
Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG: 2012 Flat nose, nice, light palate, crisp, bit light and fluffy (2013 Anteprima). | 2018 From various vineyards. Fermented at 16°C. Fnie lees aged. 15,000 bottles. Clean, light, slightly Sauvignon Blanc-like. But nice green fruit (2019 Anteprima).
