Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac is a commune in the Fronsadais on the right bank of the Bordeaux region whose vineyards are entitled to the Canon-Fronsac AOC as well as the Fronsac AOC. The Canon-Fronsac name derives from the prized Côte de Canon (‘cannon hill’), the cannon referring to either a family name (‘Kanon’) or to it having been used as a site for cannon target practice.
