Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG is a red wine from the same delimited area as the Montecucco DOC in Grosseto province. 2011 was the first vintage for the Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG. It is made from 90-100% Sangiovese plus 0-10% of any other red wine grape allowed in Tuscany with the exception of Malvasia Nera, Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and Aleatico. The Montecucco Rosso DOC red wine requires a lower minimum content of Sangiovese at 60%. ‘The sense in the parallel existence of DOC and DOCG is anyone’s guess,’ says Walter Speller (28 Dec 2012).
