Comments on the 2016 vintage: Source ColleMassari vintage report (abridged). ‘Winter was very dry with mild temperatures except for some rainy episodes in February. March brought above average spring temperatures. Vegetative awakening occurred April. June was a mild climate with average seasonal temperatures and the heavy rains in mid-month acted as a water reserve for late summer, favouring a good fruit set. The summer was dry, but with a mild climate, favouring a very long veraison and increasing the phenolic concentrations in the skins. The rains of mid-August allowed great temperature variations and created excellent conditions for an adequate and optimal ripening of the grapes both from the phenolic point of view and from the aromas. Then the summer heat and a strong luminosity returned and brought the harvest to the last days of August. After the rains of September 20th, marked temperature variations and strong luminosity were established which accompanied the Sangiovese harvest in the old vines until October 5th. The vintage gave very generous grapes, with a remarkable structure and a wide aromatic set, a great year like 2015.’
