Matera Province is located in the Basilicata region in Southern Italy, the instep or arch of the Italian ‘boot’. It takes its name from its capital city.
Geography: The province runs from the Ionian coast (the ancient Magna Graecia) to the “Murgia” passing across the ‘Calanchi‘. It is bordered to the west and south by Potenza province, to the south by the Calabria region, to the east and north by the Puglia region, and to the southeast by the Ionian sea.
Provincial capital: Matera.
