Westhofener Aulerde is a vineyard site in Westhofen in the Rheinhessen region of Germany. It is classified by the VDP as a Grosse Lage (No. 17116) or Grosses Gewächs. A south-facing hillside, sloping down toward the village of Westhofen, Aulerde was first mentioned by name in records as early as 1380. The core of the Aulerde, where Wittmann’s Riesling vines grow is composed of ‘Tonmergel mit Kalk’ or heavy clayish marl with minor portions of loess-loam and limestone, while the subsoil consists of yellow and gravelly, sandy clay. Riesling from here is said to show a Loire-like ‘fumé’ note.
