Tenuta di Tavignano is a family winery and vineyard in Cingoli in Macerata province in the Le Marche region of Italy. It was founded by Stefano Aymerich and Beatrice Lucangeli. Today Stefano is assisted by his niece Ondine de la Feld. The estate dates from the 1600s. White wines are made under the Offida DOCG, the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC, and the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva DOCGRosso Piceno DOC and Lacrima di Morro d’Alba DOC red wines are made.

Vineyards: In Località Tavignano in Cingoli (Macerata province), west of Ancona, 20 miles from Adriatic sea. 300ha of land. 30 hectares of vines. Vineyard planting began in 1992. Started with Verdicchio (the main grape variety) of which there are 16ha. Apart from some Passerina the rest is dedicated to reds: Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Lacrima, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

TerroirThe vines lie around the winery. 300 metres. Open landscape in all directions. Always windy. Esino and Musone valley = get sea winds.

Pruning: Espalier system, spurred cordon for Verdicchio.

Organic certification2018 First vintage with full organic certification. | 2021 Still organic.

Winemaking: Wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel. Only the Rosso Piceno sees any oak. Verdicchio sees no oak in order to avoid a ‘fat’ style.

Marche IGT Bianco Frizzante Il Pestifero: From 1.5ha. South-east facing slopes. Bottled with residual sugar 2nd fermentation in bottle for 2 months. Not disgorged. Unfiltered. | 2016 70% Verdicchio, 25% Malvasia, 5% Sangiovese.

Marche IGP Bianco Frizzante, Il Pestifero: From 1.5ha. Medium-height slopes with South-East exposure. 70% Verdicchio, 15% Malvasia, 15%, Sangiovese. Hand picked. Primary fermentation at controlled temperature. Bottling with residual sugar and natural 2nd fermentation in bottle for 2 months. No degorgement. Unfiltered.

Marche IGT Bianco La Vergine: From 1ha. South-east facing. Spontaneous ferment, no temperature control. On skins for one month.

La Birba: Pink sparkling wine made (it seems) with a single ferment in bottle. Bottled with 10g/l RS which then ferments to dryness. Unfiltered. Less than 3 atmospheres.

Orange wine: A skin contact white with 14 days on the skins. 6 months on yeast. Low levels of sulfites.

Offida DOCG, Pecorino: 100% Pecorino. Guyot pruned. 1ha. Piceno area. Bottled early. Unoaked.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC, Villa Torre: East-facing. 6ha. SW. Early release. No oak. Their biggest brand in terms of production (40,000 bottles). | 2016 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC, Misco: 3ha Single vineyard called Misco, the Latin name for a local river. South-east (source: their factsheet) facing in the hills of Tavignano. Calcareous-clay. A ‘Selezione is made from the latest picked grapes in some years. Spurred cordon here, gives regular yields. Unoaked. Fermented in stainless steel. | 2008 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore 14%. Lovely freshness and weight. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico DOCG Riserva, Misco: Same origin as the wine above but the grapes are picked later than the ‘normale’ above. 12m on fine lees with no batonnage. | 2014 13.8% alc. No mention of oak aging on the estate’s factsheet for this vintage.

Nice crisp soft lightly-spread honey with a touch of depth (older vines) & appealing chalkiness on Saturday 03rd September 2016 at the Palazzo Honorati-Carotti in Jesi. Directions • Leave the A14 Autostrada at Ancona Nord. Take the SS76 Ancona–Roma. Exit at Jesi Ovest. Follow signs to Cingoli. The estate is on the left-hand side after around 6km.
