Tenuta Bellafonte is a winery in the commune of Bevagna in the Montefalco region of Umbria. White wines are made under the Montefalco Bianco DOC and the Trebbiano Spoletino DOCRed wines are made under the Montefalco Rosso DOC and Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG.

Founder-owners: Sabrina and Peter Heilbron. Their first vintage was 2008.

Staff: Beppe Caviola (oenologist) and Federico Federico Curtaz (agronomist) consult.

Vineyards2017 11 hectares (27 acres) of vines. Near Bevagna, and the village of Torre del Colle. Alternately the terrain is hard and rocky or composed of the more typical admixture in this area of clay, marl and sandstone formations. The Sagrantino for red wine is at 250-320 metres (8,331,066 feet) on clay alternating with marly formations. The Spoletino for white wines is at 260-320 metres (9,333-1,066 feet) on clay alternating with marl. 5,000 vines per hectare (2,024 vines per acre).

Viticulture: Plough instead of using herbicides.

Other crops30 hectares (74 acres) of other land comprising woodland, a small orchard, and 2,500 olive trees (mainly of the Moraiolo variety). 

Winery: Subterranean winery designed by the owners to be energy efficient. Steel structure with stone walls directly in contact with the surrounding earth. Underground pipes provide natural cooling, an even temperature, humidity and ventilation. Solar panels. Biomass boiler. Stainless steel for fermentation. 30, 40 and 50hl of Slavonian oak vats for aging.

White wines

Trebbiano Spoletino DOC, Arnèto | 100% Spoletino. Wild ferment in oak barrels with 6 months on fine lees. Natural MLF. Unfiltered.

Montefalco Bianco DOC, Sperella |

Red wines

Montefalco Rosso DOC, Pomontino | Sangiovese, plus Sagrantino.

Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG

Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, Collenottolo: 100% Sagrantino. Destemmed but not crushed. 36 months in large Slavonian oak vats.
