La Rampa di Fugnano is a winery in the San Gimignano region of Tuscany, Italy. The main white wine is Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, and the main red is Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG. Wines are also made under the Colli della Toscana Centrale denomination.
Owners: Gisela Traxler and Herbert Ehrenbold, who are Swiss, bought the estate in late 1990. Initially thought they could stay in Switzerland and come here at weekends but soon re-located here full time. Gisela was a teacher at a private school. Herbert was a salesman for IBM computers.

Vineyards: 2019 22 hectares of land (woodland, olives) in total of which 8.5 hectares of vines. At 220-250 metres. When the current owners bought the estate the existing vines had been planted at 1,500 vines per hectare. They re-planted Sangiovese and Merlot at 7,000 vines per hectare Vernaccia at 6,000 vines per hectare.
Certification: The owners did have organic certification but dropped it in 2002, but without (they told me) changing the way they farmed. | 2018 Bio sans papiers.
Biodynamics: 2017 Spraying Horn manure 500, with the raw material being supplied by a local farmer.
White wines
IGT Colli della Toscana Centrale, Vi Ogni: 2002 100% Viognier. Exotic ripe dessicated fruit plus oak notes from barrel fermentation. Low acid finish. Distinctive cidery style (Visit 15 Feb 2005).
Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, Alata: 100% Vernaccia. This was called Ballata until 1995 but the name was changed to Alata in 1996 due to a trademark issue. | 2000 Fresh, ripe clear, stone fruit and varnish (Vernaccia Vintage tasting, 14 Feb 2005). | 2003 100% Vernaccia. Fermented in stainless steel and concrete tanks. Warm year. Peach and cider apple fruit (Visit15th Feb 2005).
Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, Privato: 100% Vernaccia. From a single site. | 1995 Debut vintage. | 2002 Fermented in tank, then 6 months in used barrels. Mix of exotic yellow fruit and cider (Visit 15 Feb 2005).

Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, Via dei Franchi: 2002 Unoaked. Sangiovese plus 15% Canaiolo. Soft, some spritz, evolved, rich ripe (Visit15 Feb 2005).
IGT Colli della Toscana Centrale Rosso, Bomberto: 100% Sangiovese. | 2000 100% Sangiovese. 100% barrel aged (mix of 225-litre barrels, 570-litre tonneaux and 2,000-litre wooden vats. Focused soft wild fruit; crisp centre, jammy almost but without being extracted, integrated alcohol (Visit 15 Feb 2005).
IGT Colli della Toscana Centrale Rosso, Giséle: 1997 100% Merlot. First vintage. | 2002 100% Merlot. Firm generous fruit and oak (50-80% new) at the winery (15 Feb 2005).
IGT Colli della Toscana Centrale Rosso, Sir Alone: 100% Syrah.
