Nizza Monferrato is a comune in the Province of Asti in the Italian region of Piemonte or Piedmont, located about 38 miles (60kms) southeast of Turin and about 12.5 miles (20kms) southeast of Asti. It gives its name to the Nizza DOCG.
History: As the town lies on the road to Genoa (Genova in Italian) it became a market town, selling wine, livestock (beef cattle) and quality textiles to buyers from Piedmont, Liguria and Lombardy. Other local crops include truffles, and the cardoon which is an ingredient in the ‘bagna cauda‘.
