Lambrusco Grasparossa is a red wine grape native to Italy, a member of the Lambrusco family. It is also known as Lambrusco di Castelvetro, its supposed birthplace being around the town of that name in the Emilia region of Emilia-Romagna. Uniquely for the Lambrusco clan, it gets given the higher quality sites, away from the flat plains on the valley floor, despite its versatility re soil types, and ability to thrive in clay. Thick skinned and early ripening, it reaches maturity in cooler temperatures.

The name: In autumn Grasparossa’s leaves turn red, but its stalk and pedicels do too. ‘Graspa rossa’ means red stalk in Italian.

Wine style: Grasparossa wines show deep ruby-purple colours and marked almond notes infuse its black cherry and dark plum fruit. Fleshy, creamy but chunky, full bodied and rich in tannin, Grasparossa is seen to be a crowd- pleaser, less intense and complex as some of its Lambrusco siblings.
