Fattoria San Michele a Torri is an organic estate with vines in both the Chianti Classico DOCG and the Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG in Tuscany, Italy (other wines are bottled under the Colli della Toscana Centrale denomination). The estate takes its named from the small fortified village (‘borgo’) of San Michele a Torri which lies within the larger commune of San Casciano in Val di Pesa (the valley of the river Pesa), 9.3 miles (15km) south-west of the city of Florence. In 1944, the estate was the focus of the Battle of San Michele a Torri, as New Zealand and German troops fought each other for a week during which much of the population of San Michele took refuge in the winery’s underground cellars.
