Emidio Pepe is a winery in Torano Nuovo, Teramo Province, Abruzzo, ItalyIt was founded in 1899, and has since passed to son, grandson, great-granddaughters, and now great-granddaughter Chiara. See also Sefania Pepe.

Background1899 Emidio Pepe was already famous for his wines. | 1944 Emidio passed the property to his son Guiseppe. | 1964 Giuseppe passed it to Emidio Pepe (the second, who was born 27 July 1930) in 1964. 1998 Although Emidio (with his wife Chiara) passed the estate to daughters Sofia, Daniela and Stefania (4th generation). Stefania subsequently decided to leave and create her own label. Sofia’s daughter is called Chiara and I did an Italian podcast with her.

Organics1996 Organics begins. 2005 Still certified organic. | 2007 Certified Biodynamic by Demeter Italia. | 2012 Certified organic by IMC. Certified Biodynamic by Agriobio Piemonte (valid in Italy, apparently).

Abruzzo  IGT, Pecorino: 2010 Debut vintage. Pecorino. Made using skin contact.

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC: Trebbiano Abruzzese1997 Foot trodden. | 2006 MLF. No sulfur. Some coffee and diacetyl, but interesting (Return to Terroir, 2011). | 2008 Foot trodden, fermented with no skins in concrete vats and bottled unfiltered. Interesting and rich (Return to Terroir,, 2011). 

Red wines

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC | 2000 A very hot year. Some fizz and VA and coffee, bricky, maybe also some brett (Return to Terroir,, 2011). | 2001 Nice fruit and depth, fresher than 2000, like old claret (Return to Terroir, 2011). | 2003 Very Rhône-like, lovely bright deep colour, intense, some VA and chocolate, very old fashioned (Return to Terroir, 2011).
