Cirò DOC in Catanzaro Province is the flagship wine of the Calabria region of Italy. Librandi is by far its biggest producer. Cirò DOC was originally based on its signature grape variety, Gaglioppo. Pressure from bigger producers allowed some international–read Bordeaux–grape varieties into the blend.
Terroir: Ole Udsen told me (Radici del Sud 2015) ‘the terroir of Cirò is like a little spur into the Ionian sea, the sole of Italy’s boot. It tends to have very little rain.
