Château Gaby is an organic estate in the commune of Fronsac in the Fronsadais on the right bank of the Bordeaux region. It produces red wine under the Canon Fronsac AOC. Gaby has origins dating to 1780 (and perhaps earlier). It ‘has a charming château and grounds (David Peppercorn MW (1991, p.558).
Owner: It belonged to the de Kermoal family (Henri de Kermoal). In the 1990s it was acquired by Marcel Petit (supermarkets) who gave the management to Patrick Moulinet (then owner of Chateau Gamage in the Entre-Deux-Mers where I worked in the mid-1990s. I did some cellar work at Gaby too). In 1998 Gaby was sold to Antoine and Jana Khayat (see also Fortnum & Mason). In 2007 it was sold again, to former asset manager David Curl who also also owned Château Moya (organic) in the nearby Côtes de Castillon AOC as well as Château Mika in South Africa. In 2016 Château Gaby was sold yet again sold to new owners.
Vineyards: On 04th April 2016 (at RAW 2012) the estate’s oenologist Damien Landouar told me there were 16ha of Canon-Fronsac (85% Merlot). It used to be Canon-Fronsac 9.5-ha (23.5 acres) of Cabernet Franc (15%) and Merlot (85%).
Organics: In 2012 (see above) Damien Landouar told me he was converting the estate to organics with full organic certification due in 2018. He added that ‘we want to go organic first and then add the bits of biodynamics we find useful as and when.’
Winemaking: Cement tanks.
