Apollonio Casa Vinicola is an estate in Monteroni di Lecce in the Salento region of Puglia, Italy. It produces wines under the IGP Salento, Copertino DOC, Salice Salentino DOC, Squinzano DOC.
Owner: The Apollonio family’s history took root here in 1870.
Contact: Antonio Massimiliano Apollonio.
Vineyards: Planted with the Salento’s main grape varieties: mainly Negroamaro and Primitivo, but also Malvasia Nera, Susumaniello, and Bianco d’Alessano.
White wines
IGP Salento Bianco, Elfo: 2014 100% Bianco d’Alessano. 12%. Lighter, herbier style of white, feels a bit watery on the nose. Whiff of sulphur. Palate is spritzy, cool fermented, with sulfur/matchstick too. Simple, dilute really (Radici del Sud 13th June 2015).
Pink wines
IGP Salento Rosato, Elfo: 2010 Elfo Negroamaro.
Red wines
IGP Salento Rosso: 2010 100% Negroamaro. 15% alcohol. Modernist nose, lozenge cherry. Well done, bit sappy for me, but smooth, has that Negroamaro character but in a modern interpretation (cultured yeast I guess). ‘Balanced’ says Ole Udsen (Radici del Sud 13th June 2015).
IGP Salento Rosso, Elfo: 2010 Negroamaro.
IGP Salento Rosso, Terragnolo: 2004 Negroamaro aged in American oak. | 2007 50% Negroamaro and 50% Primitivo.
Copertino DOC: 2004 70% Negroamaro, 15% Montepulciano, 5% Malvasia Nera di Lecce, 5% Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, 5% Sangiovese.
Salice Salentino DOC Rosso: 2006 80% Negroamaro, 10% Malvasia Nera Lecce, 10% Malvasia Nera Brindisi.
Squinzano DOC: 2003 70% Negroamaro, 15% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera di Lecce, 5% Malvasia Nera di Brindisi. Six months in French oak.
