Alta Toscana or Upper Tuscany is bordered to the south by the Arno river and to the north by the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The territory involved starts from the municipality of Carmignano to reach Massa Carrara, passing through the hills of Pistoia and Lucca provinces.

Terroir: Upper Tuscany is an often difficult land, squeezed between the Ligurian sea, the mountains of the Apuan Alps, the Apennines and the hills north of the Arno river, where vineyards, farms and other properties are often small, the land having often formerly been forest. The area is perhaps best known for its history, its ancient cities and villages, its artistic expressions and the personalities that created them. Moving from (inland) east to (coastal) west the presence of white Ligurian grapes of increases, the main one being Vermentino (which is also found inland near Pistoia), and also Albarola.
