Weingut Steinhaus or ‘Stone House’ winery is located the panoramic setting of Bucholz di Salorno in Bolzano (Bozen) province in the Trentino Alto Adige (South Tyrol) region of northern Italy. The main building is an historic ‘Maso’ dating to 1700, surrounded by its vineyards. It was bought by its current owner in 2017 and makes wine under Alto Adige DOC and the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGP or Weinberg Dolomiten denomination.

Owner: Agricole Gussalli Beretta.

Staff: Federico Curtaz consults in both vineyard and winery.

Vineyards: The 7 hectares of vineyards enjoy a dominant position over the Adige Valley affording a splendid view. Sauvignon blanc, Gewürztraminer and Pinot noir are planted. Altitude of between 500–600 metres above sea level. Calcareous soil. The property is crossed by the Dürer path which retraces the 1494 journey by the Renaissance artist, Albrecht Dürer.

Mesoclimate: Bucholz di Salorno encounters strong temperature variations with hot days influenced by the Mediterranean climate and cold nights from very cool mountain winds. The calcareous soil is characterized by a clayey and gravelly conformation, which encourages aromatics and acidity in both Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon.

Production: 30,000 bottles.

White wines

Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGP o Weinberg Dolomiten, Windhund: 2018 80% Kerner, 15% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Bianco. 12.5%alc.traminer. 14.5% alc.

Alto Adige DOC Sauvignon Blanc: 2018 100% Sauvignon Blanc. 13% alc.

Red wines

Alto Adige DOC Pinot Nero Riserva, Hirsch: The wine is named after the local hare.

Alto Adige DOC Pinot Nero Riserva, Steinhaus: 2017 100% Pinot nero. 13% alc.| 2018 13.5% alc. This showed some oxidation which is not what you want in a Riserva not yet 5 years old. I think that can be rectified in future vintages with some changes in oak, with finer grain wood plus having two or three types of wood if, for example, the vines are in eg two or three different places, eg on gravel and clay. On the plus side I rather liked its juiciness, its slight salinity, its avoidance of over ripeness and its tangy fluidity. I’d give it 88 points. To get to 90plus it needs to be brighter fruit-wise, more precise in the elevage, and a little bit brighter over all.
