Tornesi is an estate winery in the Montalcino region in Siena Province, Tuscany, Italy. It produces Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. The vineyards are located in three distinct areas of Montalcino, by the town itself in Località Benducce, and in the southern areas of Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate (see below).
Owner: Maurizio Tornesi. His daughters are Elisa and and Valeria.
History: The estate has always produced wine. In 1967 Gino Tornesi registered his vines as Brunello becoming one of the first members of the Consorzio as a wine producer, but not of bottled wine. Gino’s son Maurizio started the production and business side in 1993 with his first wines, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and his first Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
Vineyards: 2015 5ha of vineyards farmed without herbicides. Vine density is 4,200 vines per hectare. The vines are in three areas. There are 1.5ha located around 1km from the town at Località Benducce on the left hand side of the road which descends towards Sant’Angelo in Colle. The altitude is 500 metres. Another 2.8ha are located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate facing southwest at 350 metres. Finally, there are 1.5ha of rented vines north-east of the town of Montalcino, near Il Palazzone’s winery. There are two plots, one facing NW and the other SE.
Winery: Built in 2009 in a classic style, a traditional stone structure. The terrace affords views to Monte Amiata.
Winemaking: Hand picked. Paolo Vagaggini consults.
