Sattlerhof is a Biodynamic estate in Gamlitz in the Südsteiermark region of Austria, in the south-styrian foothills.
Owner: Willi Sattler Jnr (his father led Styria’s dry wine revolution). Alex and Andreas, who produce wine in the 3rd generation look back on a history of innovation: Their grandfather produced South Styria’s first dry sauvignon blanc, the family’s main grape today.
History: 1960s: Willi Sattler Snr moved here from Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) in Austria. | 1970s one of the first to make dry wines in Styria.
Vineyards: 10 hectares. The best site is Pfarrweingarten.
Terroir: “The harsh climate of Steiermark always challanged us to find the best ways of growing vines. To our family our vineyards are complex, self-sustaining ecosystems. That´s why we see them as a whole and stop fighting against the small troubles, but start promoting the life-circle.”
Willi and Maria started to cultivate wines on today’s famous Crus Kranachberg, Pfarrweingarten, Sernauberg and Kapellenweingarten and focus on a precise, origin-based style. Alex and Andreas now develop the quality by focusing on the natural circle of growing:
All wines are handpicked from estate vineyards. Animals such as sheep and chicken are used to promote the microbiome in the soils and promote a healty environment.
