Monterotondo is an organic estate in Gaiole-in-Chianti in the Chianti Classico DOCG region of Tuscany, Italy. The name means ‘hill summit’. Around 20K bottles are produced annually. An outstanding estate.
Owner: Saverio Basagni. Has an in-house winemaker rather than an external consultant.
Vineyards: 4.5ha (11 acres). On galestro and arenaria. Very little clay. 550-650 metres.
Certification: 2001 First vintage with full organic certification. | 2015 Certified organic. | 2017 Certified organic.
Winemaking: Red grapes are destemmed. Wines ferment in wooden vats. MLF takes place at the end of alcoholic fermentation. Can chill to cellar to 9°C. Reds left on skins are kept topped up with wine from a single designated tank.

Chianti Classico DOCG, Vigna Vaggiolata: 2016 85% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, 5% Malvasia Nera. Very fluid, juicy, intense, clear. Very good (Anteprima 2019). | 2017 85% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, 5% Malvasia Nera. 100 days on skins. Lovely clarity (Anteprima 2019). | 2018 120 days on skins. Infusion-like fruit, really bright and crunchy (Anteprima 2020).
Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, Seretina: From galestro. | 2013 95% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera. | 2015 90% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera. Lovely intensity (Anteprima 2019). 2016 90 days on skins. 36 months in oak. Galestro soils give this sense of something exotic (Anteprima 2020). | 2017 95% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera. 2,000 bottles.
