Montecatini Val di Cecina is a small town and commune in the province of Pisa. It occupies a hill on the border with the Province of Siena in Tuscany, Italy. Located around 37 miles (60kms) south of Pisa, the town, whose medieval name was Monte Leone (Castrum Montis Leonis) sits on the Poggio la Croce hill overlooking the Cecina Valley and the larger hill town of Volterra 9 miles (15 km) away. It was coveted by Pisa and Volterra but in 1472 came under the aegis of Florence. The nearby Camporciano copper mines were first exploited by the Etruscans and closed only in the early twentieth century. They were once Europe’s largest copper mines.
