Montecalvi is an organic winery in Greve-in-Chianti in the Chianti Classico DOCG region of Tuscany, Italy.
Background: 1988 Renzo Bolli, who was from Umbria, bought the estate as a retirement project with his Irish wife Bernadette. Bolli’s previous a career was in computing. | 1998 After Renzo died in March 1998 his daughter Jacqueline and her husband, Daniel, took over. They employed Stefano Chioccioli as consultant. | 2017 In October 2017 Jacqueline sold Montecalvi to Jim Drake, a London-based Australian who is a specialist in international trade arbitration. He is also co-owner of the Collalto winery in the Adelaide Hills, Australia.

Vineyards: 2019 Four main vineyards. Replanting one vineyard using cuttings from 1932 vines on stone terraces.
Certification: 2003 First vintage with full organic certification.

Chianti Classico DOCG, Montecalvi: 1992 Some VA, needed drinking tasted mid-1990s in London. | 1993 Dusty, a little unknit and gritty tasted mid-1990s in London. | 1994 Green-tasting tannin, tasted mid-1990s in London. | 1995 Clean, soft, round, tight tannin tasted mid-1990s in London. | 2013 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Canaiolo. Very nice fruit (Anteprima 2018). | 2016 90% Sangiovese, 5% each Canaiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon. | 2017 90% Sangiovese, 5% each Canaiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, Montecalvi: 2019 1,000 bottles.
Toscana Rosso IGT, San Piero: 2012 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Alicante Bouchet. | 2013 95% Sangiovese (some vines dating to 1932), 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12 months in tonneaux. Lovely flavour and texture (Anteprima 2018). Soft fruit, balanced tannin (Anteprima). | 2016 95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Made by Jim, blended by Tim Manning.
Toscana Rosso IGT, VV Vigna Vecchia: 2015 90% Sangiovese, 5% each Canaiolo nero and Ciliegiolo.
