Lo Sparviere is the historical family estate of the Gussalli Beretta family (Beretta as in firearms) family in Monticelli Brusati in the Franciacorta region of Lombardy, Italy. It produces Franciacorta DOCG sparkling wines. It subsequently invested in vineyards in other Italian wine regions: in Radda in Chianti, Tuscany with Castello di Radda, in the Abruzzo region with Orlandi Contucci Ponno, in the Langhe area of Piedmont with Fortemasso, and in the South Tyrol with Weingut Steinhaus. The 16th-century building that now houses the winery takes its name from the sparrowhawk, or sparviere, on the coat of arms over the fireplace in the recently refurbished main reception room, now restored inside the main residence.
Owner: Gussalli Beretta family– see Agricole Gussalli Beretta. Ms. Monique inherited the passion for the land and the vineyard from her father-in-law Avv. Franco Gussalli, whose family had conducted numerous agricultural activities in Franciacorta for generations. They included the production of small quantities of wine initially intended for friends and family members. That same passion has been collected and kept alive over time by expanding and developing the wine business.
Vineyards: 150 hectares of which 30 are vineyards–Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The company’s vineyards are located in the municipalities of Monticelli Brusati and Provaglio d’Iseo, close to the first mountain ranges of the Lombard Prealps.
Terroir: The soils of this area, unlike the lands of Franciacorta of morainic origin reported by the melting and retreat of the glaciers, are indigenous and made up of marl (calcareous). The name of this rock formation is Lombard flint. It is the composition rich in minerals and sedimentary clays, typical of this context, that gives structure and flavor to the Franciacorta Lo Sparviere.
Organic certification: Organic farming since 2013.
Winemaking: The 16th-century building that now houses the winery takes its name from the sparrowhawk, or sparviere, on the coat of arms over the fireplace in the main reception room. Under the ancient vaults of the cellars, Brut, Extra Brut, Satèn and Rosé versions of Franciacorta DOCG. wines are made and aged.
