Lake Bolsena is a lake of volcanic and tectonic origin located in central Italy. It is the largest volcanic lake in Europe. Roman historic records indicate activity of the Vulsini volcano occurred as recently as 104 BC; it has been dormant since then. The lake is described as Italy’s belly button from its shape and location in the middle of the peninsula. It lies 62 miles (100 km) north of Rome and is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Tuscia (Northern Lazio), and has near borders with Umbria and Tuscany.
