Jens Priewe is a wine writer and journalist. He was born in Germany in 1947 near Hamburg. He started working as a journalist having graduated from university (History of Economics & Social Affairs). From 1972–1991 he worked as editor of news magazines (Der Spiegel, Stern, Manager Magazin) covering economics and politics. In 1977 he was sent to the Chianti Classico DOC region in Tuscany to write a lifestyle article which was a struggle, given he spoke no Italian and knew nothing about wines. He moved to Florence, studied Italian, and spent holidays in Tuscany. During the 1980s he also contacted the Chianti Classico Consorzio for research support. In 1987 he published his first book, ‘Great Wines of Italy’, in German for the German market. From 1993 he then studied the science behind wine growing and winemaking, realising fine wine consumers wanted more than just tasting notes. This led to his best-know book, ‘Wine from Grape to Glass’. He then scripted a 15-episode TV series ‘The Wines of the New World’ produced by ARD (German Television Channel). He has also written for Feinschmecker. He lives in Munich.
