Jean-Jacques Loberger is a Biodynamic estate in Bergholtz in the Haut-Rhin department in the Alsace region of northeastern France. It produces Crémant d’Alsace AOC, Alsace or Vin d’Alsace AOC and Alsace Grand Crus AOC Kitterlé, Saering, and Spiegel. Loberger was a founder Member of Vignes Vivantes.

Founder-owner: Jean-Jacques Loberger (born 1965. Left school in 1983).The Loberger family has been working the vines from generation to generation since the 17th century. Successively vendors of grapes then vendors of bulk wine, their main activity is currently working in the vineyard, winemaking and wine marketing. In 1984, their son, Jean-Jacques Loberger, succeeded his father at the head of the operation by working the vines, vinifying and selling all of his production in the bottle.

Vineyards: 8.4ha but divided up. The majority of the vines are located on the slopes of the communes of Guebwiller, Bergholtz and Bergholtz-Zell at an altitude varying from 250m to 480m. The slopes of some plots reach 60%. Jean-Jacques told me at Millésime Bio 2016 his parents had cows and asparagus, cereals, and maize as well as vines.

Terroir: Three soil types: red sandstone, clay, limestone. 

Biodynamic practices: Jean-Jacques told me at Millésime Bio 2016 he did some training with François Bouchet in 1995. He told me he sprayed 500P when working his soil in spring and again after harvest. He sprayed Horn Silica 501 three times a season. 110-litre copper dynamiser (Eco-Dyn). 

Certification: 2012 First vintage with both full organic and full Biodynamic (SIVCBD ‘Biodyvin’) certification.

Gewurztraminer Vieilles Vignes: 2012 NAS, Well flavoured (Millésime Bio 2016).

Grands Crus

Alsace Grand Cru AOC Kitterlé : 2011 Varietal-could be Riesling? Foudre. Crisp, very nice (Millésime Bio 2016).

Alsace Grand Cru AOC Saering:

Alsace Grand Cru AOC Spiegel, Riesling: 2011 Foudre. Nice citrus mineral, very digeste at Millésime Bio 2016.
