The Val d’Illasi or Illasi Valley is located mainly in the Veneto region and Verona province in particular of north east Italy, except for a small area to the north, comprising the Dolomite peaks of the Carega group, which belongs to the Trentino-Alto Adige region and to the province of Trento. The Illasi Valley extends for 24 miles (39 km). The landscape ranges from the plains to the high mountains with a preponderance of medium and low hills. The valley has its outlet at the 11 Padana Superiore state road, about 12.4 miles (20km) east of Verona.
For almost all its extension it is crossed by a torrent with a rough course and, generally, poor or even lacking in water: the Illasi commonly known as Progno. Born at the foot of the rocky walls that form the terminal part of the Campobrun basin in the Carega group, the stream, after having crossed seven municipalities in a well-defined riverbed and with solid embankments (Selva di Progno, Badia Calavena, Tregnago, Illasi, Colognola ai Colli, Lavagno and Zevio) for a length of 22cmiles (35 km), it enters the Adige near Zevio with the waters of the rivers Fibbio and Antanello and of the Lisca canal.
Climate: Temperate and dry. Rainfall is mostly concentrated in the autumn and spring periods: hence the ancient denomination of Valsecca. In these periods the floods of the Progno occur which in past centuries have caused many problems to the locals in other months of the year affected by the lack of water. As a consequence of the morphology of the valley, the vegetation is of three types: basal and hilly, mountain and subalpine, with consequent differences also in the type of cultivation practicable.
History: Over time the valley has had various names: Val di Tregnago, Valle del Progno, Val Longazeria or Logazeria. The denomination “Valle d’Illasi” appears for the first time in the “Map of the Verona area” made by Don Gregorio Piccoli in the first half of the XVIII century.
Communes: The Illasi valley is divided from an administrative point of view in the following municipalities: Badia Calavena. | Colognola ai Colli. | Illasi. | Selva di Progno. | Tregnago.
