Grüner Veltliner is a white grape variety, Austria’s flagship and most planted variety.
Wine style: Its wines are said to smell of angelica and an ‘almost lentil-like flavour which the Austrians call Pfefferl’, says Giles MacDonogh, p.41) plus ‘smoky’ notes and white pepper (1992, p.33).
Vineyard area: 36% of Austria’s vineyard (Giles MacDonogh (1992, p.33).
Where grown: Across Austria, apart from Styria, and best in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) in Austria.

Winemaking: Giles MacDonogh (1992, p.33) says Grüner Veltliner does not benefit from oak ageing.
