Policy goals: Germany launched a program in 2017 to reach a 20% share of organic area by 2030 (Source: Organic farming in the EU, A fast growing sector (EU Agricultural Markets Briefs), March 2019, p.12.

Trend: Organic winegrowing in Germany has been growing steadily since the early 1970s. The vineyard area for organic viticulture has more than tripled (from 2009 to 2020 roughly–check). Overall, around 50% of all organic winegrowers are organized in associations which ask their members to work to standards stricter that those required by the European Union. The other producers have been certified according to the EU standard for organic viticulture,’ (Source: Wines of Germany).

1994 Roughly 330 German estates cultivated 1,316 hectares (3,250 acres) of organic vineyards, which represented 1.2% of Germany’s total vineyard surface area (Source: Günther Schruft, 1995).

2018: In March 2018 Demeter e.V. in Germany reported it certified 58 wine estates. An estimated 9,300 hectares of vineyards (2018) are now managed organically, which corresponds to around 9% of the total area under vines. In January 2018 Ecovin had 233 members cultivating around 2,356 hectares (5,819 acres) of organic vineyards, accounting for a quarter of all German organic vineyards.
