Garofoli is the oldest winery in Le Marche, a region on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The winery was founded in 1871 by Antonio Garofoli in Loreto in Ancona province ‘when Loreto was still an enclave independent from Italy,’ (Burton Anderson: 1982, p.317). The Garofoli were licensed to sell salt and tobacco to pilgrims visiting the local church. They also made pasta. Now it produces red wines under the Rosso Cònero and Rosso Piceno DOCs

Owner: The Garofoli family. Dante, Franco, Carlo (winemaker, started in the early 1970s when 22 years old) and Gianfranco). Now 5th generation. I met Carlo’s nephew Gianluca in Jesi in Sept 2016 and at Collision Marche 2017.

In 1901 Antonio Garofoli was succeeded by his son Gioacchino (2nd generation) and the latter founded the Casa Vinicola Gioachinno Garofoli. Thus Garofoli is the Jesi area’s oldest-established negociant (1901). His two sons Franco and Dante succeeded him after WW2.

In 1950 the Gioacchino Garofoli business became a company. Franco’s son Carlo and Gianfranco joined the company in the early 1970s. They worked together with the preceding generation for more than 20 years and they energetically promoted further development of the winery from both the production and commercial standpoints. Carlo saw how important it was to make fizz when everyone was selling still wines in amphora. The Gioacchino Garofoli winery is now a joint stock company. In 2001 they celebrated their centenary. Brothers Gianfranco and Carlo currently head it as chairman and vice chairman, respectively. In September 2005 the fifth generation entered the Garofoli company: Carlo’s daughter Beatrice and Gianfranco’s daughter and son, Caterina and Gianluca. Sparkling wines are made by both the tank (charmat) and traditional methods.

Vineyards: 2003 50 hectares of family vines. These are in Montecarotto at località Cupo delle Lame for Verdicchio di Castelli di Jesi DOC (in 2016 there were 12 ha of Verdicchio from 200m to 400 metres. Make fizz from lower part.); in Ancona at località Paterno and località Piancarda (Rosso Conero in the communes of Serra de’ Conti, Massignana and Paterno I think): and Castelfidardo (località Acquaviva).

Wineries (2): In Conero and Serra de’ Conti.
