Fattoria dell’Aiola is an estate winery in Vagliagli, a locality (‘frazione’) in Castelnuovo Berardenga in Tuscany. The estate makes red wines under the Chianti Classico DOCG, a dry white under the Val d’Arbia DOC and a sweet dried grape wine under the Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC.
Origins and history: The castle was originally a 13th-century fortress (a fortified villa). The estate was bought by Giovanni Malagodi in 1934. After the death of the Senator Malagodi, the family decided to sell the estate in 2012. The new owner is an investment group led by a Russian businessman. As well as investing in infrastructure the new owner is expanding the area under vine (see below).

Estate vineyards: 2019 Around 100 hectares of land of which 26ha are vineyards in four main blocks. Under the current owner the vineyard area will expand to 36ha by 2025.
Terroir: 300-460 metres. Soils are composed of clay-limestone (‘argillosi-calcarei’), schist (‘scitosi’) and galestro. 4,500 vines/ha.

Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, Fattoria dell’Aiola: 2015 90% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino, 5% Merlot. | 2016 90% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino, 5% Merlot. Fermented in stainless steel, then aged in botti. Just bottled: Sappy, smooth, light, fluid (Anteprima 2019).
Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, Fattoria dell’Aiola, Cancello Rosso: 2013 95% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot. | 2015 90% Sangiovese, 5% each Colorino and Merlot.
Toscana Rosso IGT Armata dell’Aiola: Mainly Sangiovese.
Toscana Rosso IGT Logaiolo: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese.
Toscana Rosso IGT Rosso del Senatore: Super Tuscan created by the founder of the estate, “il Senatore” Giovanni Malagodi. Made from 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese.
