Château Couhins-Lurton is an estate winery in Villenave d’Ornon in the Pessac-Léognan AOC on the left bank of the Bordeaux region. Madame Gasqueton was left the vineyard by her uncle, a Hannapier. The estate fell into disrepair. In 1967 André Lurton leased the estate (as ‘fermier’), first from the Gasqueton-Hanappier families and then, for a time, via INRA. In 1970 André Lurton bought a 6ha portion of the vineyard from INRA but not the château. In 1992 André Lurton boughtthe château and its original cellar

Owner: André Lurton

Vineyards: 6-ha (15 acres). Sandy gravel. Sauvignon Blanc (100%) grows on gravel with traces of clay in the subsoil which accounts for the wine’s body. André Lurton got rid of the Sémillon vines.

Winery: André Lurton made the wines at his Château La Louvière because here he owned just the vines, rather than the chateau building in which he could have installed a winery.
