Regarding the origin of Champagne’s name Tom Stevenson (1988) says the term Champagne derives ‘from the Latin campagna, signifying open, unforested land: an ambiguous origin for those who have seen only the hilly vineyards of Champagne surmounted by forest. But the classic viticultural region occupies only a small proportion of the old historical province which was, by and large, open and flat.
