Canetta is an estate winery in Località Canetta in Montalcino in Tuscany, Italy. It produces Sant’Antimo Rosso DOC, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG red wines.
Owner: Remo Giannelli (+39 335 620 9862) and his son Dott Stefano Giannelli (339.7682520) who is an agronomist. Remo bought the estate in 1997. Remo also owns the I Mori estate in Lastra a Signa in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG region.
Background:In the early 1970’s the Giannelli family decided to redevelop its small farm I Mori on the hills surrounding Florence, in the Chianti area, where the main crops are the vines and olive-trees. Canetta has three different farms and has extended its territory to 125 hectares, 55 of which are vineyards.In 1997 the Giannelli family bought the Canetta company in Montalcino. Canneta is not far from the old Fortress of Montalcino: 7 hectares of vineyards are surrounded by a thick wood.
Subsequently Canneta expanded its agricultural industry also in Maremma: a region naturally destined to the vine-growing, starting with the production of the DOC Montecucco and Maremma.
Vineyards: 1997 5ha when Remo bought the estate. He added another 5ha of vines.
Winery: In 2003 the construction of the new cellar for winemaking, bottling, storage and tasting was completed.
Staff: Graziana Grassani (consultant oenologist).
Sales: Main export markets in 2013 were USA and Canada.
Estate vineyards: 12ha of land surrounded by 30 hectares of dense wood. 10 hectares of vineyards and 2 hectares of olive groves are. It is located within 1km of Montalcino’s fortress, north-west of Montalcino itself. 350-400 metres. West-facing hill slopes. Slopes and terraces. Mainly galestro (clay-schist).
Winemaking: Hand picked.
Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Canneta: 2012 7,460 bottles. 100% steel. Nice bright modern without being too soulless, mid-weight, good entry-level Rosso (Anteprima 2014). | 2013 7,090 bottles. Sweet, bright polished, a bit tanky but OK (Anteprima 2015). | 2017 4,000 bottles.
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Canneta: 2000 Neutral, a bit dry and evolved (Anteprima 2005). | 2009 70,600 bottles. 2 years in Slavonian botti. Clean savoury cherry, well put together (Anteprima 2014). | 2010 69,330 bottles. Nice sweet fruit, well done, drinkable and fresh style, bit anonymous but good (Anteprima 2015). | 2015 64,050 bottles.
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva: 2008 2,520 bottles.
