Benevento is the capital of Benevento province in the Campania region of Italy, 50 kms northeast of Naples. It is situated on a hill 130 metres above sea level at the confluence of the Calore Irpino (Calore Beneventano or Calore) river and the Sabato. The town’s name is linked to the Roman victory over Pyrrhus. It was bombed in the Second World War and has been hit by earthquakes. As well as wine the liqueur Strega is made here.
