Bad Vöslau is a spa town in the Thermenregion or ‘spa region’ in Austria (‘Bad means ‘Bath’ in the German language and is often added to a spa town′s name).

History: The area around Bad Vöslau was already known for its reds at the begining of the 19th-century. In 1835: Franz Schams identified black grapes on the plains from the hillsides above: Blauburgunder, Blauer Portugieser and a grape he called the Schwarzfrankisch, or Mährisch (‘Moravia’) which was almost certainly the Blaufränkisch. In time Blauer Portugieser became the most planted. Local tradition says the Portugieser was brought to Austria by a diplomat called Graf Fries [but there is no evidence it is a Portuguese variety).
