Argentina, World Cup Finals
1978 Argentina: Argentina won as host nation. The team was managed by the chain-smoking César Luis Menotti. Mario Kempes scored twice in the final, a 2-1 win over Holland.
1982 Mexico: Argentina won, beating Germany in the final. Manager was Carlos Bilardo.
1990 Italy: Argentina were Finalists, losing to Germany on penalties.
1994 USA: Diego Maradona’s final World Cup. He was expelled during the tournament for a drugs violation. Argentina qualified for the round of 16 where they lost 3-2 to Romania.
1998 France: The manager was Daniel Passarella (who captained Argentina’s winning side as host nation in 1978. The press called him “The Mad Man”). Argentina beat England on penalties after a 2-2 draw (Michael Owen scored a wonder goal. David Beckham was sent off) then in the next match (the quarter finals) Argentina lost to Holland.
2002 Japan & South Korea: The manager was Marcelo Bielsa. Argentina failed to get out of the group stage, losing 1-0 to England in Sapporo thanks to a David Beckham penalty.
2006 Germany: Manager was José Néstor Péckerman. Argentina lost in the quarter finals to Germany on penalties.
2010 South Africa: Argentina lost 4–0 to Germany at the Cape Town Stadium in the 2010 World Cup.
2014 Brazil: Argentina lost 1–0 to Germany in the World Cup Final. It was Germany’s fourth world title and first sine reunification.
2018 Russia: Argentina lost 4-3 to France in the round of sixteen. Kylian Mbappe scored two goals for to give France victory and a place in the quarter-finals. France beat Croatia in the Final.
