Aldo Conterno is an estate in Monforte d’alba in Cuneo province in the Piedmont (Piemonte) region of north west Italy. It produces Chardonnay delle Langhe DOC white wine, and Barbera d’Alba DOC, Barolo DOCG, and Langhe Nebbiolo DOC red wines. Aldo’s sons are Franco Conterno, Stefano Conterno and Giacomo Conterno. Aldo set up the family firm in the 1960s having spent time in the USA in the 1950s. When he returned with new ideas these clashed with his more conservative brother Giovanni. The estate was divided in two with Aldo building his own cellar.
Vineyards: 30ha. 3ha of Bussia which is south-west-facing and includes the Vigna Cicala for the Granbussi, the flagship wine.
Winemaking: Aldo reduced the time in oak to preserve freshness, and introduced pumping over (‘rimontaggio’) in place of the submerged cap (‘capo sommerso).
