Verbena is an estate winery in Località Verbena in the Montalcino region of Tuscany, Italy. It produces Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. 

Owner: Luca Nannetti and his wife Elena Ferretti. Their daughter is called Martina Nannetti.

Estate vineyards: The farm was established in 1985 with 2 hectares of productive vineyards. It was run by Assunta Pascucci and Clara Brigadi until 1999, when Luca Nannetti [Assunta Pascucci’s son and Clara Brigadi’s nephew?] took the helm.

Terroir: The vines are on two sites. There are ?? hectares surrounding the Verbena farm and winery ? which face north-east. There are ?? hectares in Castelnuovo dell’Abate where the vines face south-east.

Winemaking: Paolo Caciorgna consults. Stainless steel for fermentation. Barrels and botti for ageing.

Red wines

Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Verbena: 1987 Debut. | 2012 16,000 bottles. 50% aged in barriques and botti. Deepish, ribena-ish black, berry fruit, bit stewed, smells a little primary and whole berries (Anteprima 2014). | 2013 13,200 bottles. Nice primary berry (Anteprima 2015). | 2014 Bit stalky, green, very simple, easy, made not grown, wine-by-the-glass stuff (Anteprima 2016). | 2018 24,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Verbena | 1987 Debut. | 2000 Unusual cassis flavours (Anteprima 2005). | 2009 16,000 bottles. Fermented in steel, then aged in botti and barrique. Mint, vanilla and blackcurrant juice flavours (Anteprima 2014). | 2009 L212/13. 14.5%. Deep ruby core and a pinkish ruby rim. Very ripe nose with mint, black berries and vanilla vying for attention. Candied. Quite concentrated, sticky black berries, a bit simple and with an impression of dryness (Montalcino Consorzio 2014 tasting). | 2010 21,000 bottles. One year in barrel and two in botti. Sticky and black mint and berry and vanilla, simple, no great terroir expression (Anteprima 2015). | 2011 Simple, bake and vanilla spice, the latter from 24m in barrel (Anteprima 2016). | 2015 34,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Le Pope: Le Pope is a Tuscan term for ‘little female kids’ as the owners have two girls. | 2015 2,660 bottles.

Other crops: Grappa di Brunello. Olive oil from the Leccino and Frantoiano varieties.
