Tuscany 2011 vintage: See Tuscany.
Growing season: ‘David Gleave MW of Liberty Wines told me (perso comm.) that ‘2011 was a difficult year in Tuscany. Heat spikes in August burnt some of the fruit, so sorting was key. I think it is a good year for wines that come from cooler sites: Ama and Isole in Chianti Classico, as well as wines from villages like Lamole; wines from the cooler sites in Rufina; Costanti, Fuligni and others in the northern part of Montalcino at altitude. The wines are nice for drinking now as they have good weight and ripeness. In Montalcino, some producers in cooler sites made a Riserva, but Costanti and Fuligni didn’t, so the fruit from the best wines went into their Brunello ‘annata’.
Production: In Tuscany in 2011 1.6 million hectoliters of DOC & DOCG wines were produced on a reported area of 33,000 ha.
