Touraine Mesland AOC is a still wine of all three colours from the Touraine region on the right bank of the Loire river to the north of Chaumont, downstream from Blois, in France’s Loire Valley. The vineyards at Mesland were planted by the monks of Marmoutier Abbey, and were the first to introduce the Gamay grape to the area in 1838. Gamay then spread throughout the region at the expense of Côt.
Soils–White wines: siliceous clay over tuffau. Red wines: ‘perruches‘ siliceous clay (‘argile à silex’) with a covering here of (Miocene) sand, or sandy loam (‘limono-sableuse’).
Vineyard area & wine production: 2002 4,261hl in total of which 3,537hl of red and rosé and 724hl of white from 200ha).
