Tiezzi is an estate winery in Località Soccorso in the Montalcino region in Tuscany, Italy, on the western edge of the town itself. Its main wines are Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. A Sant’Antimo Bianco DOC is also made.

OwnerEnzo Tiezzi. Born 1939. From the Montalcino area (I think). Former director at Col d’Orcia. Also worked for Tenuta di Argiano (whose terroir he loves). Enzo was a former president of the Brunello Consorzio (1983-1988). He spent 25 years on the Brunello consorzio. He organised the rules for both Brunello and Rosso with the Agriculture Ministers. He worked in the Siena and Montalcino areas as both agronomist and oenologist. He established the Tiezzi winery in the 1980s, buying first Podere Cerrino, then Podere Cigaleta, before finally adding a third vineyard called Vigna Soccorso, which he planted with vines. Enzo is married and his daughter is called Monica.

Estate vineyards: 2015 10ha of land of which 5.5ha of vines (100% Sangiovese) and 3ha of olives (500 trees).

Vineyards–Vigna Soccorso: Vines near the Madonna del Soccorso church in Montalcino. 500-550m. Alberello. 2.2m x 1m. 420A. WSW facing, towards the sea = hot in the afternoon. Planted 2000-2001. Soil is sandy loam, volcanic, and rocky sandstone (arenarie), rich in stones of various origins: volcanic, conglomerate, sandstone (‘arenarie’). The wines are finer, more elegant, less structured wines compared to Poggio Cerrino (see below). The terraced vineyard below belongs to another owner.

Vineyards–Poggio Cerrino: Planted 1970s. Lies 3km due north-east of Montalcino, along the road to Siena, at 350 metres [like Poggio Cigaleta]. East-facing. Cerrino is a 3ha vineyard on 420A and 5BB (oldest vines, 1970s, planted at the same time as Col d’Orcia’s Poggio al Vento by first planting the rootstock and then grafting the scion on ‘sur place’). Cordon. 350 metres, on sandy loam soil. Clay and stone fragments. Drier soil than at Soccorso. Mineral, robust wines.

Vineyards–Podere Cigaleta: This lies 3km due north-east of Montalcino, along the road to Siena, at 350 metres [like Poggio Cerrino]. Cordon.

Vineyards–La Velona: 1.5ha of vines (he planred) in the La Velona sub-zone. This is rented to Ruffino–Greppone Mazzi.

Winemaking: Hand picked. All wines ferment in Slavonian oak vats (35-40hl). They age in 50hl botte.

Wine production 25,000 bottles. Grape sales Enzo Tiezzi told me on 09th April 2015 that this winery is too small so he has to sell grapes (30% of his volume)–but the winery at Soccorso is being extended in 2015/6.
