Tiberini, Podere Le Caggiole is an organic estate winery in Le Caggiole, an area in the Montepulciano region of Tuscany. It produces Chianti Colli Senesi DOCGRosso di Montepulciano DOC, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOC red wines. A dry white wine is also made along with a Vin Santo di Montepulciano DOC.

Owner: Luca Tiberini and his brother Fabio. They are the sixth generation of their family. They bought the estate from the the previous owners, the Gamberucci family.

Vineyards1994+ The estate was replanted. | 2015 Around 22 hectares (54 acres) of land, of which 16.5 hectares (40.8 acres) are vines of which 12 hectares (29.6 acres) of Vino Nobile). Located at Podere Le Caggiole. From 290-310 metres. North-east facing. Seven soil types. The vines slope down to the Valdichiana (Chiana Valley) on medium-textured ‘tuff’ soil, with clay on the slopes, becoming sandier the lower one goes (the sand is of Pliocene origin). The Canaiolo Nero variety has always been grown here and ripens in a similar way to Sangiovese here.

Winemaking: Micro-oxidation used for softer tannins.

White wines

Brumesco Bianco IGT: Roughly 70% Malvasia Bianca, 10% Vermentino, 10% Trebbiano Toscano and 10% Pulcinculo (Grechetto). Stainess steel.

Maturato Bianco IGT: A late picked white from 1.3ha of Pulcinculo (Grechetto). The grapes used to be turned in vinegar. Fermented in a mix of steel and oak. Not sure if it is sweet. | 2015 Cement and steel. 100% MLF. Well textured, rich and savoury (Anteprima 2017). | 2016 14.5%. Salty licorice. Very spicy (Visit).

Red wines

Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG: From the Il Poggio (‘hill site’) vineyard planted with 2 hectare (4.9 acres) of 85% Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile), 15% Canaiolo Nero.

Poggioardello Rosso: 85% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo Nero. Ferments in stainless steel.

Montepulciano DOC Rosso, Podere Le Caggiole: 2011 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo Nero, 5% Mammolo. Nice and soft, subtle if a little fluid but doing well for not trying too hard (Anteprima 2014). | 2016 Sangiovese, Canaiolo. Well weighted (Anteprima 2017). | Pure, polished red fruit (Anteprima 2019). | 2018 13.5% alc. Fresh acidity, distinctive, high polyphenols. Micro-oxidation.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Podere Le Caggiole: 2010 85% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo Nero, 5% Mammolo. Light, elegant, soft and well made (Anteprima 2014). | 2014 Mint, fresh, well used oak (Anteprima 2017). | 2015 Extract dominates the fruit, just needs time to settle (Anteprima 2018). | 2016 14.5 %. Clear, rich, smooth, wild, nice tannic structure (Anteprima 2019). | 2018 13.5% alc.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG Riserva, Vigneto Campaccio: Single vineyard. From 0.85ha. Pliocene era soils. Loamy-clay with stones left behind as the sea receded. Planted 1967. 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo Nero (ungrafted), 5% Mammolo and Colorino (which might in fact be Alicante Bouchet). Vines possibly on Kober 5BB. | 2013 1,500 bottles. 14.5% alc. Tangy fruit, very salty, long rather than powerful. Lovely peony aromas with salty (Visit with Einar).

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG Riserva, Vigneto Fossatone: From 0.1.5ha. Single vineyard. Sandy soils from the  Pliocene. Planted 1967. Historically the inter-rows were sown with grain, and composted cow manure was spread too.. 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo Nero, 5% Mammolo.

Virgulto, Rosso Toscana IGT: The name refers to a term for a sturdy male youth. From hand picked Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) grapes sourced from the Fossatone and Campaccio vineyards. Fermented in steel, aged in French barrels. | 2009 100% Sangiovese. Nice fruit but also some fizz, which is a basic and avoidable fault, even in a hot, high sugar, hard to ferment-to-complete dryness vintage like 2009 (Anteprima 2018). | 2013 15% alc. Powerful palate, youthful, needs to knit (Visit).
