THOMAS MATTHEWS, American wine writer based in New York, currently Executive Editor of the Wine Spectator. His first job in wine was grape picking in Bordeaux in the 1979 vintage. He then worked as a wine buyer in for New York restaurants. He joined the Wine Spectator in 1987, when he was a freelancer living in Bordeaux. He became full-time in 1988 and was initially based in London, before later being re-assigned to New York in 1989. He became an Executive Editor in 1999, overseeing both print and online editions. His current (April 2019) title is Executive Editor, New York. He is the lead taster for Spanish wines.
He is married to Sara Matthews, a photographer, who also works for Wine Spectator. Their co-authored book ‘A Village in the Vineyard’, is a resume of their time living in France.
