GMO Terminator seed technology, also called Genetic use restriction technology, terminator technology or suicide seeds is whereby genes introduced via genetic modification to a crop plant forces it to produce a toxin which cause second generation seeds to be infertile. Such GMO Terminator or suicide seeds are made via genetic use restriction technology, also known as terminator technology. It means new seed must be bought each year. Traditionally farmers would save some of their open-pollinated seeds (wheat, barley, peas etc) to sow the following year with no need to place an order for seeds–and with no need of paying an invoice thanks to nature’s bounty. However, Terminator seeds can also be genetically engineered with a so-called Lazarus gene which would then allow them to be able to germinate. Needless to say, Terminator seed is not permitted in organic or Biodynamic farming (the latter favour open pollinated seeds). Pollen from Terminator seed can pollinate plants both nearby and several miles away (via wind), rendering them sterile and obviating any Organic or Biodynamic certification they had. Such crops would be demoted to conventional status.
