Tenuta di Bibbiano is an organic winery in Castellina in Chianti in Tuscany. It produces Chianti Classico DOCG and Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC Occhio di Pernice.

Background: Tenuta di Bibbiano is located in an area where grapevines have been grown since the 11th century, as documented in a notarial deed which in September 1089 ratified the donation by Mingarda di Morando of the “curte” and the “castello de Bibiune, cum ecclesia, cum casis, (…) viteis” to Giovanni di Benzo. The development of wine-growing in the historical Chianti area adjacent to the Val d’Elsa dates back to the late Middle Ages and grew rapidly thanks to the new techniques which reached Tuscany from northern Europe through the Via Francigena, an artery of which ran through the Tenuta. In 1865 the Marzi Marrocchesi family bought the estate. Wine-growing started under Pier Tommaso Marzi and his son-in-law Alfredo Marrocchesi between 1950 and 1970, with the help of Giulio Gambelli (who started working in Chianti in 1942), Dr Paolo Vagaggini and Professor Trabalzini. The vineyards have been expanded by the next generation via brothers Tommaso Marrocchesi and Federico Marrocchesi, who succeeded their parents Alfredo and Marzia.

Estate vineyards: 220 hectare estate. Approximately 25 hectares of vines. 270 to 300 metres on sloping hills. Sangiovese, Merlot and Colorino del Valdarno. New vineyards at 5,000 vines/ha.

Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, Bibbiano: 2019 100% Sangiovese. 30,000 bottles.

Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione, Vigne di Montornello: Said to come from the eastern sandy clay slopes beside the Bibbiano estate. | 2015 100% Sangiovese. | 2015 100% Sangiovese. 15,000 bottles.

Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione, Vigne del Capannino: 2019 15,000 bottles.

Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, Vigne del Capannino: 2009 100% Sangiovese. Smoky new oak nose, good quality wood but it has dried out  the fruit (Bronze, DWWA 2013).

Toscana Rosso, Bibbianaccio: 2014 60% Sangiovese, 34% Colorino, 6% Malvasia Nera. | 2015 50% Sangiovese, 45% Colorino, 5% Malvasia Nera.

Dominio: Merlot.

Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC Occhio di Pernice, San Lorenzo a Bibbiano: 2013 100% Sangiovese.

Other activities: Former sharecropper (‘mezzadria‘) farm houses have been turned into guest apartments.
