Tenuta di Arceno is located in Località San Gusmè in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the Chianti Classico DOCG region of Tuscany. The estate was once owned by the wealthy and respected Taja family. They then sold it to one of the most illustrious families of Siena, the Piccolomini. In 1994 the Piccolomini sold Arceno–after a delay to turn the estate into housing fell through–to the late Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke (Kendall-Jackson International Wine Estates) who were first shown the estate by Pierre Seillan. From 1995 renovation and replanting began.
Owner: Jackson Family Wines (Kendall-Jackson International Wine Estates).
Etymology: Tenuta di Arceno’s history dates to the Etruscans who dominated central Italy prior to the formation of the Roman Empire. The first traces of the mysterious and extraordinary Etruscan civilization appear in the 8th century B.C. The Ambra river, which flows to Florence, and the Ombrone river, which flows to the Mediterranean, formed the nucleus of the ancient civilization. These rivers flow on either side of the Tenuta di Arceno estate. Located at the historical birthplace of its culture, it is not surprising to find that the word Arceno has as its root, the Etruscan word arché meaning origin point.
Vineyards: 1,000 hectares of land of which 90 hectares of vines and 50 hectares of olive trees. 300-500 metres. Varied soils: rock, sand, clay, sandstone, basalt, and schist. Sediments in the lower lying area near the river, very rocky in the higher areas. They identified 63 micro-crus (based on soil, topography, mesoclimate) before planting.
