Tenuta Belguardo is located in Grosseto in south-west coastal Tuscany. Morellino di Scansano DOCG red wines are made.
Owner: Part of the Marchesi Mazzei group of wineries. The Mazzei family purchased the estate in the 1990s and produced their first wines here in 2000.
Vineyards: In the hills between Grosseto and Montiano, near the National Park “dell’Uccellina”, about 6 miles (10 kilometres) from the coast. The estate initially covered 70 hectares (173 acres), of which 32 hectares (79 acres) are vines. The Mazzei family replanted existing vineyards and developed new ones. The main grape varieties are Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante, Vermentino, Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Syrah and other local varieties. After an additional 40 hectares of land (99 acres) was purchased, bordering the original property, the total vineyard area rose to around 60 hectares (150 acres). Altitude ranges from 70 to 130 metres above sea level (230-430 feet). The soil comprises limestone, with rocky sandstone and sandy soils. Vine density varies from 5,500 to 6,600 plants per hectare (2,226-2,672 vines per acre), mostly with spur cordon and Guyot training. The mesoclimate is strongly influenced by the vicinity of the Tyrrhenian sea which is 6.2 miles) (10 kilometres) to the west as the crow flies.
Winery: A new winery was due to come on stream here in 2012.
